Teaching Maths and Science in English will actually do very little in improving the level of English itself, however this is a great vision of the great man.
The great man, Tun Dr. Mahathir had done everything in order to provoke the Malaysians and Malays in particular for the only reason of wanting to make us more competitive.
Teaching Maths and Science in English if not one of his masterpieces, still it is a wonderful parting gift for us.
Teaching Maths and Science in English will not help cure the problem of bad England amongst Malaysians and the Malays in particular. Maths is about formulas and Science representing lots of concepts. It will not help you master your grammar nor did it help your to make a better sentence in English.
2+2=4. Whether you understand English or not, all Malaysians who had attended pre school will know the answer on their first day at year one.
Perhaps because it is about concept and it is better to teach concept in the natives mother tongue language? And the world libraries is full of reference books in Bahasa Malaysia! Yes, our Maths and Sciences professor has written trillions of pages of books in Bahasa Malaysia.
Malaysia is equals to German, France, Japan, China and Iran that our civilisation has began so early that Parameswara himself is a great engineer and without mastering even a word of English he already managed to built such a memorable structure as a symbol of such civilisation. Unfortunately, the structure was kidnap by English speaking people when they conquered us.
Reality is, we are not such a great nation that had live in the world map as centre of civilisations for thousands of year. Reality is, when we search for a book on particular subject in Maths and Science for our University assignment, the truth is we rarely find it in Bahasa Malaysia. Even if we find a few in Bahasa, we hardly understand it because the Bahasa Malaysia language used is so strange.
The truth is, learning Maths and Science will not help us to speak better English but it helped us to understand all those great books by people from those great civilisations. English is so widely used that many great books from many languages had been translated into English. You do not need to understand Latin, Chinese, Hebrew, Persian, French, and Italian etc to read those great books written by those great men who never speak English in their lifetime.
Some claimed, Bahasa Malaysia is so great that it is spoken by 300 millions people the world over. But if you check with all the publishers, an educational book written in Bahasa Malaysia rarely sells because the market is so small.
Yes 300 millions people understand and speak Bahasa Melayu but try to print more than 1000 copies in the first print, I bet you will have a hard time convincing your financer.
I bought few communication books during my last visit to Jakarta, a year ago. After six months, I can hardly read pass the first chapter of the first book because the difference in the language is so jarring. And this is the Bahasa Melayu spoken and understood by 300 million people world over?
If teaching Maths and Science will not tremendously improve the level of English amongst locals, then why take the risk and risk the future of Maths and Science itself.
Well a great stone-age man will always attempt to kill two birds with one stone.
For those who excel in Maths and Science in English, sky the limit for them when it came to reading great books on the subjects. For those who failed their Maths and Science because they hardly understand English, we ought to look at their diet because they may have visibility problem.
2+2=4. Be it in Java, Bugis, Bajau, Tamil, Hokkien or Malays.
A picture that depicts an illustration of a caterpillar is still the same whether it is in Java, Bugis, Bajau, Tamil, Hokkien or Malays.
Basics for beginners are all the same and learning it in English is an evolution.
Why not try to improve the level of English by using other subject like ‘Kemahiran Hidup’, ‘Tatarakyat’, ‘Kajian Tempatan’ and arts?
Well, if 2+2=4 is very confusing enough in English, I can imagine the hoo-ha that will come with it.
Don’t tell me Mahathir never knew that they teach English in Kelantan dialect in SK. Kusial or SK Semut Api.
Don’t tell me Hishamuddin never knew that they teach English in native language in Pontianak?
Perhaps, our so busy academicians never knew that when the students spell B-E-D, they would say LAMBED in in SK. Semut Api in Kelantan, which is just about 10 kilometres from Kota Bharu.
Mahathir knew the level of teaching degrading each day and one of the reasons why English lesson is not making any in roads in rural areas are because of the teachers.
Gone are the days when people wanted to become a teacher because of they want to help their ‘anak bangsa’. Most of those who apply to become a teacher nowadays are because of material issues. Nevertheless, material is important and we respect their decision.
Becoming a teacher is low at risk because you will get your posting as soon as you graduated. A Bachelor of Education graduate need not worry about searching for jobs, they only need to think of whether they need to buy a sampan with them after their posting. But I knew a Bachelor of Aeronautical Engineering who ends up working at a factory in Penang because he is not able to take the challenge of communicating in English.
So our children’s school are flooded with teacher searching for stability rather than exploring their passion. The seriousness in the teaching profession is lacking each day. Everyday is about preparing students for examination.
Teacher communicate less and teaching less due to over dependent on activity books.
Graduate in Maths and Science usually are smarter then the rest because those who get good result in examination at school levels are transferred to the science streams. And due to its competitiveness, only those with the high marks will get to do the first degree in education.
So naturally, it is safer to rely on Maths and Science teachers due to lots of reason.
Well as I said earlier, teaching Maths and Science in English will not improve the level of English but it is the easiest way to make student used to English without all the grammar hindrance. It is about making them used to English and to force them to voluntarily speak English.
They can do their calculation in their mother tongue or think of a concept in their native language before then put it in black and white in English. 2+2=4.
But it is not always as easy as 2+2=4. But sure it is an easy start to help them find some courage to converse in a language most of them never use at home or at the paddy field.
It is however not going to be easy for them, if we keep putting our political ambitions ahead of their future.
Personally, what I see is nothing but those who disagree are only because of bruised ego, shallow minded nationalistic village hero and politician trying to outdo each other.
Please stop trying to mess with those innocent children’s future. I had seen enough of my friends suffering from those same jaguh kampung of the 70s. Does the Pakar Bahasa help find them a job because they are brilliant in Bahasa Malaysia?
have you tried to look at one of the english activity books for school children? my brother do may do it very well because he has me, his brother, my mom and dad to translate each of the activies for him.
what happen to students in rural area. with teacher who is more worried about their stability than their passions in teaching. where could they go? wouldn’t they get bored and just throw away the books.
i think this is not about fighting for tak melayu hilang di dunia. it is about the rurals boys and girls future. English is something they can learn when they go further. at least dr rebungnya, we put in their interest in learning maths and science. when they got the interest, they will find way how to read all the great books translated in English.
As you say, maths and science in English doesn’t really help their grammar.
Our concerns is for them to learn them and master them and like them. not about wht languages they r using..
I dont think all the Pakar Bahasa you mentioned is fighting because they are just bruised ego, shallow minded nationalistic village hero. They r fighting for the sake of our children.
I know, you got your point. They got theirs. But if you brutally condemmed them like this. I think the bruised ego, shallow minded nationalistic village hero is YOU!
Thank you.
eh,
is this official stand for your boss,Husam also??
how can it conradicts with PAS stand to champion Malay languange ?
are you saying PAS and PKR is politicising the issue only?
wahhhh..you can’t be seriouss..
Salam sheikh..
Malay languages should be limited to be use in Home & Pasar only. LOL!
Sorry Sheikh,
You inferred, 2+2=4.
Absolutely wrong. 2+2=4.
Apa ini…..I am of the opinion that learning Maths and Science will cause hardships to some Malays dwelling in the downtown.
I mean 2+2=22 alright.
Fixed the English language itself by producing more quality teaching and teaching method. Maths and Science got nothing to do with English.
Teaching of England for Science and Maths has very little to do with improving England, as you rightly pointed out. If you want to raised standard of English, you have to bring back English Literature.
The points about Englisg and Science and Maths are many. Books, journals for scientific and technical knowledge and research are plenty. Even if the original manuscript are in Japanese, German or Swahili; if such have academic value, it will be translated in England. Such is the domination and proliferation of England language.
Also, looks at those Manuals that come with your appliances, machines or even car/ They are in England. Your computer manuals? Are they in Bahasa Melayu? manual for your handphone? Manual for your Iron (Sterika)? TV? Then manual for Lathe machine? manual for M-16? Manual for Kereta kebal? Tomahawk?
And, what about those Anglicsed universal formula? F=ma, E=mc2, V=IR? Do you want to translate them, when one look at the formula, 90% of technical people will know what those algebraic expression stand for.
It is not that Bahasa Melayu is not a competent technical language. It will take a lot of time and effort. The way to short cut knowledge acquisition is to get it in England language.
What amazed me is that those who are against England for Science and Maths (that in Bahasa Melayu translates to Ilmu Hisab!) is that these are from “Arts” (Sastera) stream!
Finally, you are in ICU and in for what? Tubercolosis. mention ICU, people knows, straight away. mention TB, people know. Try batok kering (BK). Eh, I kena BK.
What is on your computer? Windows XP or Tingkap XP? Granted that it is a “brand”name, but gosed to drive home the point of Englan domination and proliferation as technical & scientific lingua franca.

This is my third try…before I am cut off..or changed to another blog…by mysterious ways!!
I wish to congratulate Sheih for this brilliant piece.
Lets Muslims read and find out..why are they jobless..contented and believing. it is God’s will.
Dr.Hsu of “Dr. Hsu’s Forum” also wrote a beautiful piece concerning Malaysians.
He is a Gerakan active member…trying so hard to convince Gerakan to pull out from BN.
Sheih knows…Muslims are the ultimate loosers…if they keep believing UMNO can guide them to a better tomorrow.
Given a choice, I will send my kids to Chinese Based primary school where all subject are in Mandarin except English and BM.
I have a small poll and 88% want just English! Can we go back to 50s or 60s where everything in English except in primary school where mother tongue are used
http://shiokguy.blogspot.com/2009/03/all-subjects-in-english-please.html
Shiok Guy
saya rasa elok kita ajar subjek melayu dalam bahasa english.
Sheih, I told you. You are good when you stick with the issue rather then taking side.
Since they are still fighting over SRJK(T) and SRJK(C), why not we fight for SRJK(I)? Or, why don’t we just abolish those T and C and replace it with Sekolah Inggeris? Atleast its fair to everybody and I don’t have any reason to fight for SRJK(J) in the future. (By the way, “J” is for Jawa).
Let us not underestimate our children lah. Let them learn. Math and science would not help our grammar and vocabulary or turn anyone into an Einstein but we have to build a foundation somewhere.
Belajar susah sikit pun nak melatah.
Let me say my final dua sen.
If the “Memperkasakan Bahasa Melayu” is the objective, then make sure that all signages, all information, leaflets are all written in BIG Bahasa Melayu. Go to Japan, Indonesia, Thailand. They have all signages in mother tongue, and some English translation in small wording underneath.
All intelectuals should come out with proper glosarry/terminology.
No more Baggage=begasi, No more Parking=parkir, No more Business=Bisnes, National=Nasional! That is too blardy lazy!.
Or, housing development called, Bel Air, Buena Vista, etcetra
Or, bila rumah murah di panggil Angerik, Kiambang, melur. Bila rumah mahal di beri nama, Carcossa, Camelot, Bounty, Lancaster, Tudor, etcetra
And, to those who want to be citizen of Malaysia, must pass Bahasa Malaysia SPM! Ini dudok Malaysian sampai nak mampus, bahasa Malaysia acuh tak acuh, tunggang langang. Kadang2, mayat nak bawak balik tanam kat Cina atau bakar kat India!
Mother tongues taught taught at primary levels. Secondary school all in English for Science, Maths, Commerce, English Litt. Otherwise all in BM for Sejarah, geography, et al.
Tertiary – do like UiTM. Students are encouraged to master 3rd or 4th language. Just like Europeans, Thay will know 3-4 languages as a norm.
This is the emphasis on ILMU. Towards aquisition of knowledge. Politics aside. I am very sure plenty of people are widely travelled. I love Indonesians or the Thais. They forced those pendatangs to conformed- by budaya and language – in order to ensure the supremacy of the adopted country culture and language into their daily lives of the pendatangs.

My Bahasa Melayu is okay, my england is lousy and my mandarin is helpless.I have no problem with BM or English as long as our kids are trained to make use of their intelligence instead of being taught one way .
Whether we like it or NOT, English will remain as the International Language throughout the world. Globalization is forcing us to do the things that most people dislike to do – The question is: Do we have a choice?
I once interviewed an undergraduate Electrical Engineer from USM. The interview was conducted in English. The Chinese lad had difficulty to express and answer my questions until he requested if he could use our (both of us) common mother tongue – i.e., Mandarin. I rejected him and I did not shortlist him. Some of you might criticize me but to work in my previous company and most of the multinational company (MNC), English is such an important communication tool to talk to Taiwanese, Japanese, Europeans and the Americans.
Like my parent used to tell me – if you can forget your own mother tongue, you can also forget your own parents and ancestors. BM will not be forgotten by Malay. BM is a first language in our school, which means that it is pre-requisite to “pass” in order to move on to the next level in our education process. So, how could we forget about BM if he/she studies until the University? I just can’t imagine those people that match on the street on Saturday as there isn’t any basis or rational that BM will be undermined if Math and Science are thought in English! They are “shallow” in their thinking and these people will find difficulty to adopt themselves in today’s globalized world. Malaysia has scarce resources and Malaysia will not be able to feed us forever for generation and generation. We have to stand up and compete in this globalized world. The fittest will survive!
Some time when I look at the scientific terms that translate into BM really make be laugh!
Kesimpulannya, apakah saya menyokong PPSMI? Ya. Ya.
aku lebih suka anak aku belajar math & sains dlm bahasa melayu..
nak tau kenapa banyak pelajar tak mampu berbahasa english dgn baik..?
1. Kat skolah takde minggu bahasa Inggeris.
3. Takde pendedahan kat sekolah & kat rumah.
4. Sebelum sibuk pasal grammar, aku fikir pelajar2 kena tau vocabulary dan banyak membaca.
5. Inisiatif diri sendiri utk byk membaca memang hancus, dah la ngaji Quran pon hancus.. English pon tah hapa2
6. Sedara mara tak galakkan, kalo galakkan pon.. sedara mara dan keluarga tak bagitau pelajar2 ni pada time bila PERLU GUNA..
7. ENGLISH MASIH DIANGGAP BAHASA ORANG KAYA DAN MODEN.
My support for Kickdefella. My own experience as an undergraduate student, I had difficulties to learn Physics during my foundation year. FYI, I came from science stream class during my secondary school which use Bahasa Malaysia as medium of teaching. It troubled me a lot.
Much of the references and text books are in English. We use English during lectures and it was like ‘rusa masuk kampung’. For the first time, I met the words, Velocity? Acceleration?. Numerator? Denominator? What the heck?.
I am a malay. I studied Math and Scince in Mandarin. No problem, in fact when I entered a malay secondary school, I was the best malay student, since math and science in Chinese school are at a higher level.
I think the government need to explain to the people clearly what is the reason behind this move as there are many who still do not understand.
The only concern is whether our teachers are qualified and able to teach in English. If not, then this move will not succeed.
For those who says that this will undermine the status of our mother tongue, I think this is quite debatable. The others subject is still to be thought in Bahasa Malaysia.
Most of the literature in Scince and Math is in English. It makes a lot of sense to teach in this language. I am also not to sure about the viability of converting every terminology to Bahasa Malaysia ,this will lead to confusion when one refer to English version of Science and Math later.
Actually there are 2 groups suffer the most due to this language issue.
The actual guinea pigs in this matter are a) Students b) the Teachers
a) The Students have to struggle to pick up the English Skill in order to study the Maths and Science in Secondary School. We know it’s not that easy.
b) The Teachers whom was educated and graduated previously in BM has to struggle more horribly to improve their standard and communication skill in English first before they can teach their students in English. This is also not easy.
These are the 2 groups of the guinea pigs or lab rat for the Politicians that has screwed up the entire education system more than 30 years ago.
For your info I was working in Singapore for many years and I personally faced lot of difficulties because of my communication skill in English was very poor due to our “failed” education system.
Because of their greedyness, our politicans has ruined the life of many Malaysian. Almost every parents particularly those from poor back ground, the students and the teachers are suffering terribly just to change and to absorb the changes made by the politicians.
To be honest, English is not an easy language to learn within 1 or 2 years time and at the same time it is an important language if we want to survive internationally or professionally so we cannot effort to ignore it.
If you ask me WHEN and WHAT is the best solution to overcome this problem? I think I have an answer for that question BUT it need all the Malayisans to be very OPEN MINDED, other wise it will be another useless suggestion.
I strongly feel that the teaching of ENGLISH will be very successful if we emphasized it in the Primary School. So once these students entering Secondary School, English as a language is no longer a burden or obstacle for them. If this idea can be been implemented, the secondary school can teach all or partially the subjects in BM or ENGLISH because these students are ready for it.
Even if the MOU think the students should study in BM in secondary school, it’s not an issue anymore because orignally our students already can command in BM and English fluently due to their earlier “preparation” from the Primary School.
Honestly speaking it is much much more easier to teach not only the English but any other subjects when the kids are small. So when come to teaching English,Primary School is the best option. Bak kata pepatah Melayu “Melentur Aur Biar Dari Rebong”
What MOU should consider is to teach “seriuosly” English, Bahasa Malaysia, Jawi, Mandarin and Tamil in Primary School. In another word, by the time a students leave the primary school:-
1)A Malay Student should be mastering in English, Bahasa Malaysia, Jawi, Maths and other subjects.
2)A Chinese Students should be mastering English, Bahasa Malaysia, Mandarin, Maths and other subjects.
3)An Indian Student should be mastering English, Bahasa Malaysia, Tamil, Maths and other subjects.
So, once these 3 groups of the students entering Secondary School, language is NOT AN ISSUE anymore and the teachers no need to crack their heads because of their poor command in English. Now they can seriously and freely concerntrade on the teaching the subjects fully in BM. And as usual teach English subject in a quality English.
For Chinese and Indian students, make sure the mother tonque is a COMPULSORY subjects in Secondary School as well. If our Government can give this assurity, I’m sure the idea to have all students under one roof can be achieve very very soon.
So, once these students leaving the secondary school, each of them probably will have a good result and more important, they can communicate well in Bahasa Malaysia and English.
Trust me, if these suggestion can be implemented now.. in next 10 or 15 years time, education wise, easily we can stand parallel with Singapore
Thank you.
Re-introduce the English Medium School, and let the people choose, they can send their kids to the Malay Medium if they want to, leave the Chinese alone, they can decide whether to send their kids to any of the two or the Chinese private schools……However, bear THIS in mind ! Give the children a break, think of the child who, for all these recent years have been taught ( Maths & Science ) in English – don’t go switch, says next year every body do Maths & Science in Bahasa now…….
Did any body ask their kids’ opinion regarding all these ” Maths & Science ” things ? Go ask your kid who is in Form 3 or Form 4 about switching to Bahasa next year and see their reactions…
Have any of you people ever thought of in the years to come when, one of your kids says ” Fxxk, it’s all my old man’s fault, sending ME to English school. Now I can’t speak Malay !!” or ” Fxxk, it’s ALL my old man’s fault, sending ME to Malay school, Now I can’t understand or speaks English !!”
My daughter came back one day and asked me why her english teacher is so poor in english compares to hers…. I told her not to be rude and she should be more humble when noticing people making fault.
But to my horror which later I found out was the teacher was greeting the class with this words…….” How is you do, class? ”
I have nightmares nowadays whether I sent my daughter to the right school system or not….. By the way, my daughter is in Form One now, should I worry or not?? Or should I worry for them when I grew old and it’s too late to “equip” them to face the global challenge?? You tell me, parents….
in malaysia, we got few levels of education. First is the primary school and then the secondary education. The next education is the pre-U and uni level.
I think, any change or reform in education should take a gradual step. esp. when it involves the primary school age children and students below ‘tingkatan 4′. What is more important is to promote them to enter school life and attend the lesson regardless any subject they take.
If english language is one of the barriers for them to learn and understand important lessons like maths and science, the ministry of sekolah rendah/menengah must provide them with solutions.
what is more important to stress here is – any change should have the foundation. this foundation must be strong and well-prepared. (i.e well-researched, well-planned, well-trained teachers etc.)
the problem lied in the teaching method and the question should be about the understanding of the concept not about the language.
aku masih berpegang kepada kalo nak pro ENGLISH @ apa2 bahasa sekali pon.. bukanlah menggunakan medium subjek yang lain.. waima bahasa sekalipon kecuali bahasa ibunda.. kena ada subjek khas..
THE ROOT OF THE PROBLEM IS… student yg duk university tak bleh cope dgn byknya buku2 rujukan ENGLISH.. terutama student yg melibatkan math&sci.. byk buku rujukan dlm ENGLISH.. tapi, dah byk jugak buku2 tersebut diterjemah ke bahasa melayu..
kalo budak U tak bleh ber-ENGLISH… sapa salah?? camner diorang bleh masuk U?? adakah markah ENGLISH diorang time SPM adalah markah yg tak represent keupayaan berbahasa diorang??
Paling teruk.. ENGLISH juga widely used dlm bidang bizz, IT and mcm2 lagi lah.. jadi.. sebenarnya tak perlulah susahkan budak2 skolah dgn PPSMI ni…
pada aku.. cukup jer dgn dorongan MAK BAPAK & GURU2 SUPAYA MEREKA BERUSAHA BERSUNGGUH-SUNGGUH..
inilah kekurangan kita ( rakyat malaysia ).. terutama BANGSA MELAYU.. jatidiri kita kureng.. hanya bersungguh time nak gaduh ngan org.. bila diajak berhujah dgn ilmu.. hampes… emmm.. tak semua la.. kepada yg fikir dia dah ok.. ok la.. kepada yg rasa blom ok… kena sama2 perbaiki diri lah…
Last time when I first started schooling, I didn’t know a word of English. We didn’t speak English at home because parents and relatives couldn’t speak English. So we speak English only in school and mother-tongue elsewhere. But that didn’t stop us from being good in English, Science and Maths.
Of course that was in the 60s and 70s when Malays were somehow smarter than the Malays nowadays. There were also more Indian and Chinese teachers then too. Perhaps it’s a combination of smarter Malays and smarter teachers in those days.
how are you bro?
have not heard from you a long time….. anytime coming over to PJ? remember, we are supposed to do teh tarik.
i am supporting your points and let’s give as little as we could to the future generations when it comes to english language. i do involve in recruitement and i have no choice but to strike out those who can’t speak in english. cruel? no, it’s a requirement.
maybe people just don’t understand that studying math and science will help them to improve in english sub-consciously. let’s look at it on another angle. do we really improve our BM if we study science and math in english? of course, we learn about the terminology, we understand the paragraph whereby it gives a scenario and you are asked to solve the problem.
maybe those who don’t understand this concept should be sent back to primary /secondary school to know what it means.
low quality teacher, thanks to the bad education policy that produces bad teachers. it takes time to destroy good education and it takes time to build back good education. we are only 6 years post implementation of PPSMI. come on, give it at least another 10 years to see the result. you think education is instant noodles where you must see results within a few years. send the teachers to learn english, read english newspapers, converse in english, read more Malaysia-today and kickdefella’s blog, watch more english TV series and it will help. don’t believe…. i am one of the by-product of the above lah.
what i meant in earlier comment is:
do we really improve our BM if we study science and math in BM? (correction from english)
what i meant in earlier comment is:
do we really improve our BM if we study science and math in BM (not english)?
While this is an interesting piece and definitely deserving a tad more attention on grammar and sentence structure, the author is definitely mixing a few issues into this connundrum of PPSMI. Firstly, teachers are teachers. There is no such person who is defined as a teacher that does not have personal issues or inner demons in carrying out his/her duties. Hence, your attempt in demonising this person in relation to this issue is lame at best and completely uncalled for. Secondly, indeed there is nothing magical about 2+2=4 and you are spot on in using English as the language medium for KH or other subjects. But the big picture is about acquiring the language and getting use to it in the more “technical” field. Supporting you on the point that supposed Engineering professionals have a problem in reading and writing in technical journals. It’s about time, that one should stop expressing condescending views on “kampung” folks. Have you taught in a kampung/interior schools before? Have you seen their sheer determination in learning and excelling? If not suggest you try it out and you would be amaze how their whutzpah(may not be the correct spelling, hence pardon the error) would put you any town folk to shame. In conclusion, knowledge is knowledge and it is precious in any form or language. So, in what ever language it is used to be disseminated, ultimately, it is the person that will determine how successful that information has been best used. QED.
Stupid or wrong govt policies are the main cause of the deterioration of english language…. back in 1978 SRP (1st time after changing from LCE). In LCE, u must pass the English exam BUT in SRP, you can fail english, tak apa!!! This is the begining of english going down the drain….
i have interviewed graduates back from american universities and yet could not speak a word of english!! imagine that. what a waste of public funds sending these goons to america.
In just 20 years time, ie 2000 mahathir realised this mistake and therefore changed maths and science to english. now after 5 years implementation, ppl still complaint. dont they realise its for their own or their childrens’ own good?? so, now with the pressure from these masses, the govt revert back. do u think
we can be a developed country by 2020??
in my opinion, MAKE ENGLISH A COMPULSORY SUBJECT TO PASS IN PMR AND SPM EXAMS…. this can solve the issue.
My personal opinion is to have a freedom of choice in education meaning to say having an English, Malay, Tamil or Mandarin stream schools to be available for all. And in this school, B.Malaysia to be taught as a compulsory subject since it is our national language. By doing so, all parents from all walks of life can choose whatever school they prefer for their children and it will be their decision at the end of the day without blaming anyone else for it. Some may claim that English is better and others claim that B.Malaysia would be wiser so where do we end? If you have plans in sending your children for tertiary education in an English speaking country, would you not start sending them to an English medium school from day 1? Likewise, if you only intend to send them to a local university that conducts in B.Malaysia, I feel it will be better for them to start in B.Malaysia from day 1. Do we realise why are the elites including our politicians are sending their children overseas to study rather than in Malaysia? If you need an answer ask them. If they believe that the education system is so advance in other countries, why are we not trying to follow suit? I have a hunch that common Malaysians should not be taught smarter than their children, otherwise the tendency of many others competing for the high posts they are beholding now will be lost. Just look at our politicians, the leaders of this country are handed down from one generation to another of the same family. Maybe the reason is because you cannot speak good English and that is why you are not qualified to be a MInister. A minister has to be able to speak as many languanges as possible so that we do not fumble when we communciate with others worldwide. We must understand that ministers from other countries do not speak B.Malaysia to us but instead we must speak to them in English and why is that so? I do agree that all Malaysians must speak B.Malaysia but to be able to excel well outside the country we must be well verse with English which is the official language internationally. Ten years ago there are hardly many Chinese in China whom speaks English but you can see that there are doing very well now. Just take a peep on CCTV9 Astro and judge for yourselves. Soem of them have even tried to master English by having minor operations on their tongues, vocal cords & etc to ensure that their pronounciation do not defer from that of an English speaking native which I find it most ridiculous. Of course they must have a reason for doing so I suppose. Let us now ponder now whether we want our children to be “Katak dibawah tempurung” or prepare them to face the world.
That English is not an easy subject to be learned can be proven after reading the comments from the readers. Grammatical mistakes and wrong usage of words is not uncommon. Just take Dreamteam’s and Mustaffa’s comments, both used “thought” when it is supposed to be “taught”. If you compare the two, it is not difficult to find more grammatical errors in the former than the latter. Well, I don’t think they are to be blamed, as I understand that most probably they did not go thru the proper learning of English where grammar forms an important aspect of the subject.
I would like to tell them not to narrow their scope. Look at the other children as well.
My kids are good in these two subjects taught in English too. But I personally think that for the primary schools, these two subjects should be taught in the language that the students can understand.
My children are fortunate because their father is bilingual although not very rich. Their father have to struggle to afford them tuition classes. Not just any fly-by-night tuition classes. It cost their father a lot of money and he is balding while these tuition teachers are upgrading to Civics, Altiss, Accords, Camrys and even Mercs and Beemers.
Kesian kat anak-anak orang miskin.
Do you fail a student if he cannot answer “Five plus Five” correctly, when he can give a correct answer to a more difficult question in Bahasa Melayu???
If you do, you are not being fair to him.
A bright student may be deprive of a future just because he does not understand English since he was brought up in a family who speaks only Bahasa at home and mix with Malay speaking friends.
Teach the primary school children the English language properly first. For six years, they should be taught the language until they are proficient.
When they enter secondary schools, they can easily understand the Science and Mathematics subjects taught in English.
Firebrand.
Better for us to study Maths in Chinese, Science in Tamil, English in English and others in Malay.
I am from Sarawak and let me share with you the stark comparison between secondary school graduates before and after the implementation of Bahasa Malaysia as the teaching medium. Part of the deal in joining Malaysia, English would remain as Sarawak’s working language for the 10 years after 1963.
I have met many Dayaks who are in their 40s and 50s and have respectable command of English as compared to the later generation born from the late 70s onwards. Most of these old-schoolers came from very humble beginnings as longhouse children whose parents not only could not read/write in English but were simply illiterate. This is the great similarity between them and the kampung children that we are all worrying about today.
What’s the difference? Teachers.
In the old days, the teachers had respectable commands in English. Some were even expatriates – maths/science teachers from India, Christian missionaries and even American Peace Corps volunteers. Teachers today are the product of an education implemented in Bahasa Malaysia – they are of the generation born in the late 70s onwards so it should not be a surprise to us on why they are struggling with the language. In fact, the struggle that we see today is being faced by the teachers, not the students!
To revert back to Bahasa Malaysia as the medium to teacher math and science is simply fueling the already pathetic state of the ability of the younger generation to communicate with the rest of the world. IMHO, in addition to keeping the current policy, the standard of English must be upped to the extent that to get an A1 in the SPM English paper is as difficult as to get an A1in Bahasa Malaysia. The syllabus from Primary 1 to Upper Six must be reworked in its entirety and mimic the Singaporean syllabus. Btw, there are tuition schools in Sarawak which offer English classes following the Singaporean syllabus. Very popular over here among Chinese students.
The first batch of SPM graduates who studied math and science in English from day one of primary school was in 2007. Give another 4 to 5 years. Slog it out and we’ll have a new crop of teachers who had studied the subjects in English.
This is reality speaking. So please do not ignore.
cyoun .. !
Asyik2 salahkan guru . Guru lagi bermasalah . Baru setahun dua buat P&P tup..tup dah tukar silibus pulak . Tambah2 kalau guru2 yang biasa . Dalam setahun 3-4 kali pertandingan sekolah cemerlang . Nak ISO lah nak Fail Meja lah .. nak berICT lah ..pastu nak prepare P&P 26 masa seminggu ..
Language is only a tool. Just as we try to buy the best car in the world and shun our beloved PROTON we should likewise in the selection of language. Language is only a tool and we should not turn it into an Ideology.
my last word.. ENGLISH AS A WAJIB LULUS SUBJECT.
IMPROVE ENGLISH SILIBUS..
TEACHERS KENA IMPROVE JUGAK PERFORMANCE DIORANG.. ANAK BANGSA DITANGAN DIORANG..
easy way,
2type of schools now. it is fair. you want u can get and if u dont, dont ever try to learn in english because it is sucksss…
Dear Sheih
Let us ALL look back & LEARN from our early history of this great nation & our forefather’s struggles…
The British educated & trained Intellectuals, Professionals, Economists, etc (Oxford, Cambridge, etc).
- In 1957 FINALLY gained our Independence from the “Colonial British Rule” through the citizen’s “concerted” struggle & the Leadership of our Bapa Malaysia Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra & his Malaysian cabinet of TRUE TUANS managing the system of Wesminster style Democracy & with the Rule of Law in 1957,
That was the old UMNO (led by Tunku), MCA (lead by Tun Tan Cheng Lock) & MIC (lead by Tun Sambanthan) under the banner of the “Alliance” government.
Is not that the “Better & Smarter” choice by the Leadership of our Bapa Malaysia Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra & his Malaysian cabinet of TRUE TUANS managing the system of Wesminster style Democracy & with the Rule of Law in 1957….
Through Political negotiations & POLITICAL SOLUTIONS leading to a “Bloodless” handover & the Independence of Malaya!
It proves a point that Educated, Intelligent, Smart & Wise leaders do not have to resort to Threats, Militancy & unnecessary Battles with collateral damage & bloodshed to the citizens!
I was there at the Dataran Merdeka to witness the occassion on 31st August 1957 – the joy, tears & jubilation of Tunku, his cabinet & every Malay, Chinese, Indian, etc citizen of Malaya !
So let us ALL accept the fact that our forefathers suffered but persevered & did not give up the struggle for Independence….until it was achieved !
Let us ALL also learn that Tunku & his Malaysian cabinet of TRUE TUANS, EARNED the RESPECT, TRUST & SUPPORT of ALL the Malayan citizens.
It was in 1969 our Bapa Malaysia Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra & his Malaysian cabinet of TRUE TUANS managing the system of Wesminster style Democracy & with the Rule of Law, was “Betrayed” with the
“13th May 1969 BLOODY coup d’état” by the “Elite UMNO Ketuanan BEGGARS”….Tun Razak & his group…
- some of those are still “Alive, Kicking & Mentoring ALL the New Ketuanan Beggar Wannabes.”
- This great nation, its assets, its Original EDUCATION SYSTEM & its Anak Bangsa Malaysia have been abused for the last 40 years by these “Moronic Idiots & their Goons” through “Gutter Politics” & the “Law of the Jungle”.
- Divine Intervention Works Wonders & What goes round will come round to “Haunt” UMNO/BN baru.
- Why is the UMNO/BN Government “Bodoh Sombong” still trying to “Reinvent ANOTHER OF MANY, MANY FAILED EDUCATION SYSTEM WHEELS” (Back to Square One!)…..
- When our EDUCATION SYSTEM “BASIC WHEEL” since 1957, just needed to be “REDEFINED and REFINED”?
- If we just “Swallow our False Pride, be Honest & Sincere”, the “Whole Nation and the World” will be with us to HELP out!
- We only have to “Look, Acknowledge, Ask and Learn” from our neighbour down South – their TESTED, TRIED and PROVEN Original EDUCATION SYSTEM solutions which have “ENDURED THE TEST OF TIME” – DYNAMIC, RESILIENT SUCCESSFUL for more than 50 years !
- Our Ketuanan UMNO/BN Government’s ego from 1969 to “Destroy” the TESTED, TRIED and PROVEN Original EDUCATION SYSTEM solutions which have “ENDURED THE TEST OF TIME” – DYNAMIC, RESILIENT & SUCCESSFUL for more than 50 years with their Malaysia Boleh version have FAILED & FAILED & FAILED for 40 years!
- So 40 years later, after WASTING Billions of Tax ringgit, they FINALLY learnt that their MEDIOCRE Malaysia Boleh version….
- Their MEDIOCRE Malaysia Boleh version has NOT BEEN & is “NOT RECOGNISED INTERNATIONALLY”….
- Therefore, Ketuanan UMNO/BN Government HAVE NO CHOICE but have to revert back to the “Original”…..
- Ofcourse their UMNO/BN “Ketuanan” supporters including the Opposition PR “Ketuanan” supporters nationwide feel “CHEATED & PROTESTED”….
- So The Ketuanan UMNO/BN Government’s Reversion Plan Backfired & a SLAP in UMNO’S/BN’s face !!!
I am not surprised UMNO/BN Ketuanan Leaders are INVOLVED in PROMOTING the most recent Protest & UMNO/BN “Ketuanan” supporters who took part with the PR supporters also got “Water-cannoned, Tear gassed & arrested” by the Police & FRU !
What I call “COLLATERAL DAMAGE” to their own “UMNO/BN Ketuanan” supporters.
As such there will be a “MAJOR Revolt” of their own UMNO/BN Ketuanan downstream Leaders & supporters against their UMNO/BN Ketuanan PM, DPM, etc at the coming Assembly !
How come the initial report claimed 124 protesters were arrested but later said that they were released released except 9 (PAS & PKR ?)
What about those released….”COLLATERAL DAMAGE”?….(INSTRUCED & PAID UMNO/BN Ketuanan downstream Leaders & supporters?)
I say it again….
What goes round will come round to “Haunt” UMNO/BN Ketuanan Leaders – Backfired & a SLAP in UMNO’S/BN’s face
Divine Intervention Works Wonders to accelerate their “Self Destruct Implosion.”
I am for PPSMI. Would you stand a better chance to get a job with brilliant Bahasa Melayu?. Only that a few amendments had to be made such as teaching methods and of course teachers. Speaking of which, which one do you prefer ‘Penentu Kedudukan Sejagat’ or ‘Global Positioning System?’Linear Misclosure’ or ‘Tikaian Lurus’?. If you still could not see the light, try to look at pakcik makcik who had come from English school.Who are they now?.
may i repeat again…. MAKE ENGLISH A COMPULSORY SUBJECT TO PASS IN PMR SPM etc. this wil ensure the std of english goes up again to prior 1970 s std.
it looked so silly in our universities having the english proficiency tests, and see so many failed!!! going into univ to learn english?? what a bladi waste…..
of cos i know the prob of kampung children having no one to teach them english… It is the govt responsibility to rope in retired teachers, part timers or even foreigners to teach these children and try improve back the std of english. afterall, it is the poor policy or purposeful reason of the govt to make the std of english deteriorate to wat it is today, in the first place.
so Instead of spending billions in white elephant projects and wasting even more in corruption and cronyism etc. why not use the rakyat’s money wisely and improve the std of english.
1,000 years ago England was invaded by the Norman French feudal Lord Guillame or William.
His band of Frenchies defeated Harold the Saxon King and placed William on the throne.
King William and his merrymen in one fell swoop consigned the Anglo Saxon nobility to servitude by his French men who hitherto became their the feudal lords. Many a Anglo noble had to become a farmer-serf tied to the land and slave to a French Lord.
Norman French became the language of the adminitrative institution of the land naturally as these conquerers only spoke French.
These Anglo-French also like to meddle in their home country France and the French Kings of England desired to take the French throne one day. Thus begin 800 years of intermittent warfare with France.
As a consequence of this conquest the written language of the Anglo Saxon disappeared with no nobility to write it.
Anglo SAxon became the language of county bumpkins (from the french point of view)and unsuited for “cultured” and “civilised” discourse.
But the French lords need to talk to his Saxon servants and serfs as well as to their bedding Saxons partners of both sexes, the two languages have to produce a mongrelized version of both tongues just as they were producing half breed Anglais children.
As the Anglais children torn between being French and tied to the soil of Albany were being defeated by their mainland brethrens, hatred for things French began to grip their hearts.
The nascent English national movement began to clamour to remove the French language from being spoken in England.
In 1350s the Statue of Pleadings were enacted to declare that the language of the Courts shall be the mongrelised anglo-saxon – french tongue call for the 1st time “English”.
To make sure that all those nobles were to understand this law, it was still written in French !!
This was easier said than done.
The Anglo-French nobles though most of whom by now were proficient in English, the bastard tongue, but they still prefer to write and converse in French for it was the language whom the “cultured” converse.
THe Anglo Saxon descendants who lived in the towns too have caught on this fade as the French Language was the language to get ahead.
Pupils were taught in French in schools.
Then came the BLACK DEATH in 1500s.
This decimated the towns and most of its Francophiliac middle class. Within 50 years Francophone doctors, accountants, shoemakers, tailors were all gone.
THe English country bumpkin speaking variety of English began to fill the towns. Schools had to teach English because there were no French teachers and then the children of these peasants couldnt speak French.
Many of those nobles became to worry that the Anglo-French aristocrats who were now schooled in the English and have to conduct official business in English would lose their edge in crossing tongues with their continental enemies who have taken French as the language of intra European diplomacy.
But these people were not in the tide of history and circumstance.
English continued to grow with Chauser and Shakespeare as well as with the naval ships of the flag of St George and Mark.
Bt French lingered on. The last echoes of French in official Court records were still being written in the 1700s.
To this day the royal asssent on any acts of parliament in England declares “La Reyne le veult” The Queen wills it.
How I lament the defeat of the French Nobles to keep their language alive in England. I would be writting this in the language of Romance and Love.
Thanks to Cygnusx1 (00:13:13) for commenting my response above.
Jika masih berlagak pandai, susahlah. Jika berkata ‘our Maths and Sciences professor has written trillions of pages of books in Bahasa Malaysia’, buktikan lah… Jika betul pun, adakah ia mencakupi bidang semasa ataupun teknologi 50 tahun yang lalu?
anti-ppsmi misunderstand the objective of ppsmi.
they thought ppsmi mean to improve english among students.
but actually it is obvious that the objective is to enable students to get access to a wider variety of resource since most resources are written in english.
maybe in primary and secondary,it is not clearly important.but when it come to the university..when the resources are mainly english, student will have hard time translating it.
example..even for computer manual,if you translate it..somehow you will get confuse.like this “the button in the interface will launch the application”=”butang yang berada di dalam antaramuka tersebut akan melancarkan aplikasi itu” which is..you know..quite confusing.
so instill the mind of youth to study math n science in english just for the sake of knowledge.

News update/ berita terkinihttp://darkblueeye.wordpress.com/
dear abcdefg
Saya rasa saya tahu kedua2nya, BI & BM
butang=button; antaramuka=interface ; aplikasi = application
konsepnya sama shj
Bangsa2 Jepun, Korea & Taiwan berjaya dlm S&M kerana mereka belajar S&M dlm Bahasa Ibunda mereka.
Jadi kita semua sokong BI perlu dipertingkatkan lagi cara mengajarnya, dgn matlamat anak2 kita mampu berdwibahasa, Justru kita tidak lagi bermasalah membuat rujukan buku2 INggeris.
Jadi, berbangga dgn bahasa warisan kita.
Malaysia boleh!!!
Oh Please Guys,
don’t make me laugh dude
look, look at this sentence:
“Teaching Maths and Science in English will not improve the level of English….. It is about making them used to English and to force them to voluntarily speak English”
Sigh~
Don’t you all think that if this two IMPORTANT subject were taught in BM (bahasa malaysia), there might be lots and lots of difficulties when we move on into society because Maths and Science were all in English~!!!!!!!!
For Japan, Korea, German and France, they can actually teach Maths and Science in their own language because they have their own superior technology and we’re NOT.
Bahasa Jiwa Bangsa. Bahasa Melayu Jiwa Saya. I am damned confident with my mothertongue for the teaching of Math and Science!

apa maksud kosa kata.
